Serena's journey

HSO is full of interesting stories. By letting the person behind the job title speak, we give a glimpse into their journey at HSO and what it’s really like to work here

Meet
Serena van Ooijen
Power Platform consultant

"That was exactly what I needed: to grow myself, communicate with the customer and take my own responsibility. As a result, my learning curve accelerated incredibly fast."

New opportunities within HSO: my move to the
Power Platform team

Serena, Power Platform Consultant at HSO, talks about her transition from her role as project manager in the Data & AI department to her role as Power Platform Consultant. She takes us through the challenges, opportunities and how her previous experience helps her in her current role.

Start at HSO

Sometimes opportunities come from unexpected places. In my case, it was a family member who was a client of HSO. He asked, "Do you have another spot for a project manager?" Shortly after, I sat down for an interview. We clicked straight away, and not long after that I started as a project manager in the Data & AI team. Quite a change, as I came from a large organization with a team of 500 people. At HSO, it immediately felt more personal and accessible.

Development and transition to Power Platform

After two and a half years as a project manager, I began to ask myself whether that role really suited me. I noticed that I needed more of a hands-on approach, rather than just making plans and keeping tracks of things. During a conversation with a colleague from the Power Platform team, we discussed my options. Since I was already familiar with this service line, the transition felt like a soft landing.

I was immediately given the opportunity to work at a customer's site on a small project. That was exactly what I needed: growing myself, communicating with the customer, and taking ownership. My learning curve increased significantly as a result.

Of course, I also ran into pitfalls. The architecture of apps, in particular, proved to be a challenge. I often had to go back to the drawing board, but precisely because of that, I learned a lot. With the help of my colleagues, I grew into my new role step by step. I also learned to be calmer in my work. In demos, I now take the customer step by step, instead of rushing through everything quickly. Every week I present what I have done and how the customer can use it in practice. That way I stay close to the business while also being technical.

Expectations and opportunities

One of the first major projects I had the opportunity to contribute to was a CO₂ app. I knew I could play a role right away, with the support of the team. That gave me confidence. I also quickly got the chance to lead workshops and develop my consulting skills. For now, my focus is on building and consulting, but I see plenty of opportunities to grow further.

My impact on the team

My experience as a project manager still comes in handy. Structure and planning are essential, even in my new role. For example, I introduced weekly demos for customers so that they have continuous insight into progress. Because I previously viewed projects from a higher-level perspective, I now have a better understanding of what customers may encounter. That makes me more effective as a consultant.

Support from HSO

Moving to a new team was exciting for me. Coming from a close-knit and fun team, I didn't know what to expect. Fortunately, the Power Platform team turned out to be just as fun and supportive. My manager immediately saw what I could add, but also clearly indicated what the team could offer me to further develop myself. By the way, I’m still in touch with my former team: we regularly do activities outside of work.

What I like best is that HSO offers room to go in a different direction in your career. If you doubt whether your current role suits you, you can look for new opportunities within HSO. For example, I spent a day with another department.

My tip for colleagues

There is plenty of room to grow at HSO. Not only in your own department, but also outside it. If you’re unsure whether your current role suits you, be sure to start the conversation! Check with colleagues, discover what is possible and dare to take that step. Sometimes the right opportunity is closer than you think.

Working at HSO

Working at HSO means more than just a step in your career; it's about finding your purpose and taking a meaningful journey on a global scale. As a proud Microsoft partner, we are passionate about innovation and empowering our people to contribute to a better world. At HSO, you'll be part of a progressive organization where your career will be shaped by growth, community, flexibility and purpose. Want to know more? Join the journey!

“We’re becoming more international”

Expats bring fresh ideas and new energy. But they also face challenges. A new country, a different culture, unfamiliar work habits – and on top of that, building a social life.  To exchange experiences and build connections, an expat community was created. Not a formal club, but a space where international colleagues can meet – over lunch, at a drinks event or just for a good conversation.  We spoke with three of them about their experience: what was it like arriving in the Netherlands? What stands out in the work culture here? And what does it mean to be part of this community?

HSO Academy: “We hire for attitude, we train for skills”

"Not your diploma, but your drive. Not your experience, but your curiosity." That seems unthinkable – but not at HSO. "With the right basic attitude, anyone can get started here," says Henk-Jan Brommer, manager of HSO Academy. It sounds ambitious, but practice shows that it works.

Collaborating with other business units

Professional development begins with collaboration. The biggest steps are taken when we combine our knowledge and talents. Take Albert Hol (Project Manager) and Gerben Mulder (Consultant Management). They worked together on a project for a large retailer, where the billing process was renewed within Dynamics Finance & Operations using Azure Functions. The solution enables the retailer to process and invoice about 150,000 order lines quickly and accurately every day.

Manager, Total Rewards

Position Summary At HSO, how we pay and support our people reflects how much we value them. As Manager, Total Rewards, you will own the strategy behind our compensation, benefits, and payroll programs, ensuring they are competitive, compliant, and aligned with our business goals. This is a hands-on leadership role. In the near term, you'll also personally manage payroll and benefits operations for our 400+ person remote workforce, while building the case for - and hiring - a Coordinator to support you. Once that hire is in place, you'll shift fully into a strategic total rewards leadership role. We're looking for someone who can operate at both altitudes: comfortable owning compensation strategy and compliance at the executive level, and equally comfortable rolling up their sleeves to keep payroll and benefits running accurately in the meantime. Key Responsibilities Total Rewards Strategy Own the design, competitiveness, and compliance of compensation and benefits programs across the organization. Conduct market benchmarking and internal equity analyses; recommend pay structures, incentives, and benefits offerings that support retention and business goals. Lead annual compensation review cycles, Variable Compensation Plan (VCP) administration, and compensation modeling for leadership. Lead self-funded health plan strategy, vendor and carrier negotiations, and annual renewal and open enrollment strategy. Monitor and interpret pay transparency, ERISA, ACA, FMLA, and related regulations, translating requirements into policy and process. Lead pay equity analyses and FLSA classification reviews.
