“We’re becoming more international”

Expats bring fresh ideas and new energy. But they also face challenges. A new country, a different culture, unfamiliar work habits – and on top of that, building a social life.

To exchange experiences and build connections, an expat community was created. Not a formal club, but a space where international colleagues can meet – over lunch, at a drinks event or just for a good conversation.

We spoke with three of them about their experience: what was it like arriving in the Netherlands? What stands out in the work culture here? And what does it mean to be part of this community?

Gulchin Gasimova

Consultant in the Customer Engagement team, lives in Apeldoorn and initiated the group.

“I’m from Azerbaijan and came to the Netherlands five years ago for my master’s. After that, I started working at HSO.”

Why did you start the expat community?
“I set up the group in January. In February we had our first lunch. It immediately felt comfortable. That’s exactly why I wanted this: so that others could feel just as welcome as I did. Not just at work, but outside of it too. When you’re new to the Netherlands, it can be overwhelming — the language, the rules, how everything works. Then it’s great to have people around you who understand that.”

“The community is a place where you can be yourself. Where you don’t have to explain why something feels new or difficult — because the other person already gets it. I hope we can keep creating that space. And that we grow stronger as a group, with our own voice within HSO.”

Would you recommend HSO to other expats?
“Absolutely. When I started, there were only a few expats at HSO. That felt a bit daunting at times. But that’s really changing. You can see we’re becoming more international — and that makes a big difference.”

The expat community helped with that too. “Everyone saw the value in it. No one said no. Of course, there are challenges, especially at the beginning. But you’re never alone. There’s always someone willing to help — whether it’s a colleague or someone from the community. That makes HSO a great place to grow, even if you’re coming from abroad.”

Damini Nayital

Finance consultant in the Finance & Operations-team.

“I was born and raised in India. I’ve been working at HSO for a year now and live in Veenendaal.”

How was your start?
“My onboarding went smoothly. Everyone was helpful and I never felt excluded. There’s a flat hierarchy and everyone is approachable — that makes it easy to find your place. You can reach out to anyone, even people you don’t work with directly.”

What does the expat community mean to you?
“When I heard about the group, it gave me an immediate sense of reassurance. Knowing there are others going through the same thing. You understand each other without needing much explanation. It’s great to share tips and tricks that make the transition easier. That way, you help not only yourself, but others too.”

Would you recommend HSO to other expats?
“I’d definitely recommend HSO. You’re given space to be yourself and do your job well. The atmosphere is open, people are friendly, and there’s always someone willing to support you. That means a lot when you’re new to a country.”

Gergely Balog – Technical architect in the Finance & Operations-team, lives in Amersfoort.

“We used to live in Budapest, but we were ready for something new. After some travelling, we chose the Netherlands. Now I work at HSO as a technical architect.”

What stands out to you about the Netherlands?
“Dutch people tend to stick with the same group of friends they’ve had since high school. Expats are different: we’re always in a new country, always looking to connect. We’ve travelled, we speak good English – that makes it easier to reach out and share experiences.”

What does the expat community mean to you?
“It’s nice to have a group where you can ask practical questions: how does public transport work? How do you find a GP? Those things may seem small, but they make a big difference when you’re still adjusting to a new environment. And it’s just good to meet like-minded people.”

What is it like working at HSO as an expat?
“It’s not always easy. Some colleagues – especially the older generation – aren’t comfortable speaking English. I felt that tension at first. But once people get to know you, that changes. They take the time for you. Personal connections really matter, especially in a large organization like this.”
