Meet Hilde van der Meulen, the ever-evolving mindset
From Graduate to Lead Consultant.
"My favourite part of working at HSO is the freedom you have to define your path."
Opportunity to work with more experienced people
Shortly after graduating, I was looking for career options that would give me the opportunity to work with more experienced people in organisations that were always evolving and improving themselves and that is why I joined HSO because of its legacy. Plus, the combination of both technology and strategic business was always interesting for me. That was the start of my career journey in 2012 when I joined as a junior consultant.
The first few years I was getting to know the technical side and the systems and was also more focussed on project methodology and functions. The second part of my career I now had the know how and could be a consultant and find my own way of working. This then brought more time for personal development and personal leadership skills.
In the latter part of my career I have spent more time on combining the basics of functional consulting but with the skills developed for coaching, mentoring and career progression. Five years ago, I started coaching and mentoring new colleagues and training new mentors within HSO shifting to a wider role at HSO.
My favourite part of working at HSO is the freedom
HSO Academy didn’t exist when I first joined, but it now plays an essential role in helping people figure out what part of the job to focus on and what they are good at and where there is room for development professionally and personally. The personal development side is something HSO has introduced me to, and they brought in an external coaching organisation to deliver this coaching programme and we have since made this available to senior consultants too. This wasn’t just a one-off course but lasts for 3 years.
My favourite part of working at HSO is the freedom you have to define your path. When I figured out I would like to spend more time on one-on-one mentoring and coaching I talked to my manager and we agreed there was space in the organisation to perform that function beside my normal function. This has played a huge factor in work happiness!
If I was to give advice to anyone thinking about joining HSO I would say if you don’t wish to stand still, then HSO is perfect for you. But be aware that the ‘know how’ you have today is not what you might need tomorrow. Speed of change can be asking a lot of you but gives you huge opportunity to work with management, customers, colleagues in experiencing how to use it in our best way and be challenged. Have a vision of who you want to be, what you want to do and where you want to go.

"When I started at HSO it was a lot smaller but the culture of collaboration and everyone being willing to help you has never gone away, I still experience this daily. Plus, the values of HSO and its people as always evolving is the biggest most favourite one for me too."
HSO has been with me
I have seen organisations where the values and culture hasn’t carried through with growth and it is very important to have a lasting connection with the company. As consultants we are always working with the customer, so you need to retain a connection with HSO too and not just client and customer teams.
