Don't chase shiny, chase outcomes. Stay curious. Have FUN!

Sean adores comics, old books, sci-fi and watches.
He says; having been in school, I knew I wanted to work in Tech, and I have done so since leaving full-time education, so for some 26 years now. I consider myself a geek at heart.

I have been married for 21 years (together 26 years), and my son is away at University this year. I prefer to talk rather than to text, and I love helping people do and think about things differently.

What’s your work routine?

I start by scanning priorities for the day and checking in with some of the team. Less about rigid routine and more about discipline and consistency. Discipline beats motivation every time.

What’s one misconception about technology projects you’ve come across?

That success is about the technology. It isn't. Most failures I've seen have happened because business goals and user adoption weren't aligned with the technology project.

What metrics matter most in a tech project?

Adoption, and how it relates to business outcomes. Not the budget and Deadlines. Is the solution being used, and is it delivering the outcomes it was meant to?

Something you wish you’d known about your work when you first started?

Technology changes faster than organisations. Learning how to help people and organisations keep pace is the key.

What did your biggest professional failure teach you?

Perfection is impossible, to coin a phrase - Perfection is the enemy of good. & Failure is rarely fatal if you own it, learn and improve.

The #1 thing that helps organisations get value from their technology projects?

Executive sponsorship, engaged users and ALIGNED business goals between them.

Your parting piece of advice?

Don't chase shiny, chase outcomes. Stay curious. Have FUN!
