Microsoft Announces New European Digital Commitments

On April 30, 2025, Microsoft unveiled five new European Digital Commitments to reinforce its dedication to digital sovereignty, security, and economic growth across Europe. These commitments include expanding its AI and cloud ecosystem, bolstering digital resilience amid geopolitical uncertainties, safeguarding European data privacy, enhancing cybersecurity defenses, and supporting Europe's economic competitiveness, particularly through open-source initiatives. Microsoft emphasized its intention to collaborate more deeply with European cloud providers and to operate sovereign cloud datacenters in partnership with local companies in countries like Germany and France.

Microsoft announced plans to increase its European datacenter capacity by 40% over the next two years, expanding operations across 16 countries. This expansion aims to ensure uninterrupted service for European customers and to reinforce trust amid calls for greater technological sovereignty within the EU.
