About Techion

Techion Group is a New Zealand ag-tech innovator best known for FECPAK, a portable digital-microscopy platform that lets farmers capture faecal egg-count (FEC) images on-farm and send them to the cloud for analysis and long-term tracking. Since 2011 the company has pioneered “microscope-in-the-cloud” services, building the world’s only global parasite-disease database and processing tens of thousands of samples every year.

Techion Microvision: Real-Time Parasite Diagnostics at Global Scale

See how Techion, in partnership with HSO and Microsoft Azure, converts on-farm microscope images into lab-quality parasite counts in under five minutes

Why Techion Needed a Change

Rapid success created a new constraint: every extra country, species and customer required more technicians to label images around the clock. Microsoft analysts estimated that undetected drench resistance already costs NZ farmers NZ$98 million a year, yet Techion’s turnaround times could still stretch to days, pushing producers to treat animals pre-emptively.

Internally the firm was sitting on more than 120 000 expertly annotated images, but off-the-shelf computer-vision models topped out at only 47 percent accuracy on the tiny, crowded egg images — far below diagnostic standards.

The Path Forward – Microvision on Microsoft Azure

HSO re-architected the pipeline around a two-stage neural network inspired by crowd-counting research: a density-map model pinpoints thousands of XY coordinates, followed by a custom classifier to speciate each egg. Experiment management, data curation and automated ML pipelines run end-to-end in Azure AI Studio, giving researchers elastic GPU capacity and traceable model versions out of the box. Hosting the production API in Microsoft’s new Aotearoa hyperscale region satisfies strict local data-residency requirements for future human-health applications while keeping latency low for users worldwide.

“With a combined accuracy across our localisation model and classification model, we’re now providing egg-speciation accuracy above 95 percent — on par with clinical diagnostics.

Key Benefits

Microvision doesn’t just shave hours off parasite testing; it rewrites the economics of microscopic diagnostics. By automating count-and-identify tasks that once relied on scarce human expertise, the AI model gives producers instant, lab-quality insights, scales effortlessly across borders and species, and unlocks new environmental and bio-security gains that manual workflows could never reach.
  • 1

    Instant, Always-on Diagnostics

Farmers receive validated FEC results via email in under five minutes, 24 × 7, regardless of weekends or holidays.

  • 2

    Clinical-Grade Accuracy

Combined localisation + classification delivers >95 % per-egg accuracy, matching specialist lab performance.

  • 3

    Scalable Global Coverage

The AI now handles the workload previously managed by multiple online technicians, letting Techion service customers across four continents without additional headcount.

  • 4

    Sustainability & Animal Welfare

Real-time evidence enables targeted-selective treatment, cutting unnecessary drench use, slowing anthelmintic resistance and reducing livestock methane emissions by up to 30 %.

  • 5

    Data-Driven Insights

FECPAK’s cloud database feeds regional parasite-trend dashboards and academic studies, enhancing surveillance programmes across species.

Why HSO?

Techion evaluated several AI vendors but chose HSO for its deep Microsoft expertise, proven computer-vision track record and collaborative approach. HSO’s architects helped balance global model coverage with local sample bias and set up one-click retraining pipelines so Techion’s scientists can fine-tune models as biological conditions evolve.

“Our experience with HSO has been highly collaborative. Their team gave us technical capabilities we hadn’t seen elsewhere and helped shape the architecture that underpins the model’s performance.”

Looking Ahead

Building on the Microvision core, Techion is partnering with Awanui Labs to adapt the technology for human diagnostics, water quality monitoring and broader environmental testing, aiming to bring point-of-care microscopy to underserved regions. Parallel advances in low-cost digital microscopes and AI-assisted parasite research underscore the vast potential to automate microscopic workflows well beyond agriculture.
