Azure Application Engineer
As an Azure Application Engineer you can expect to...
Design, develop, test, deploy, and support production applications on Microsoft Azure, contributing directly to hands-on implementation using C# and .NET/.NET Core.
Build and maintain APIs, microservices, enterprise integrations, event-driven components, serverless solutions, and background services.
Modernize legacy applications through refactoring, re-platforming, and cloud-native redesign while improving security, reliability, performance, and maintainability.
Translate business and technical requirements into practical application designs, applying architectural best practices and selecting appropriate Azure services, integration patterns, data stores, and hosting models.
Evaluate and clearly communicate technical tradeoffs across Azure App Service, Functions, Container Apps, AKS, APIs, messaging, event-driven processing, batch processing, and other solution approaches.
Troubleshoot complex issues across application code, Azure services, APIs, integrations, databases, identity, networking, and deployment pipelines using logs, telemetry, distributed tracing, and application metrics.
Build reliability into solutions through patterns such as retries, timeouts, circuit breakers, and idempotency, and participate in releases, production support, and root-cause analysis.
Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps and/or GitHub, automating builds, testing, security validation, code-quality controls, and deployments while supporting repeatable environments through Bicep, ARM, or Terraform.
Collaborate with infrastructure, security, identity, and database specialists when solutions or production issues cross technical boundaries.
Dedicate approximately 15–20% of your time to mentoring junior developers through code reviews, pairing, and technical walkthroughs while remaining primarily focused on hands-on delivery. Formal people management is not required.
You’re great at...
Writing production-quality C# and .NET/.NET Core code and contributing directly across design, development, testing, deployment, troubleshooting, and production support.
Making practical technical decisions, explaining the tradeoffs behind them, and applying architectural best practices to new implementations and modernization efforts.
Diagnosing application and integration issues using Azure Monitor, Application Insights, Log Analytics, telemetry, tracing, and other observability tools.
Designing secure, reliable, observable, performant, and maintainable cloud applications.
Understanding how networking, identity, security, configuration, and hosting decisions affect application behavior without needing to be a dedicated infrastructure engineer.
Working effectively across technical disciplines, particularly with infrastructure and security engineers on connectivity, identity, deployment, and application concerns.
Conducting thoughtful code reviews and promoting effective development practices around coding standards, documentation, testing, maintainability, and source control.
Mentoring junior developers while maintaining a strong personal focus on hands-on engineering and delivery.
Communicating technical designs, dependencies, risks, operational considerations, and architectural decisions clearly, including during in-person design and whiteboard sessions when needed.
Sound interesting? If so, you’ll have...
10+ years of software engineering or application development experience, including strong hands-on experience with C# and .NET/.NET Core.
Recent experience delivering production applications on Microsoft Azure, with the ability to discuss specific solutions you personally built, technical decisions and tradeoffs you made, problems you diagnosed, and outcomes you achieved.
Hands-on application development experience across several areas such as ASP.NET Core, REST APIs, microservices and distributed systems, event-driven or message-based architectures, enterprise integrations, serverless and background processing, relational and NoSQL databases, authentication and authorization, automated testing, and performance optimization.
Substantive implementation experience with several Azure technologies, such as Azure App Service, Azure Functions, Azure API Management, Azure Service Bus, Event Grid, Azure Storage, Key Vault, Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, Azure Container Apps, AKS, Azure Monitor, Application Insights, Log Analytics, Microsoft Entra ID, managed identities, Azure DevOps, and/or GitHub.
Working knowledge of Azure infrastructure concepts, including VNets, subnets, private endpoints, public and private connectivity, network security groups, firewalls, DNS, API gateways, load balancing, managed identities, role-based access control, containers, Azure hosting options, and Infrastructure as Code using Bicep, ARM, or Terraform.
Experience using automated testing, CI/CD, code-quality controls, security checks, and repeatable environment configuration as part of application delivery.
Experience modernizing legacy .NET applications for Azure, supporting regulated or business-critical applications, working with enterprise APIs and event-driven systems, and/or mentoring junior developers is preferred.
Financial services or investment banking experience is preferred.
Microsoft Azure development, DevOps, or architecture certifications are a plus.
Residence within reasonable commuting distance of New York City is preferred.
