In future-state, agent-based work environment, this process looks quite different. After the project manager describes the assignment, the agent then:
independently creates a project,
selects the appropriate template,
activates the necessary financial processes,
and sets up the correct workflows for execution.
The project manager no longer needs to know which action takes place in which system. They evaluate the outputs of the agent and intervenes only when necessary
Business software isn’t going away, it’s just taking on a new role.
It’s important to note that this development doesn’t mean existing applications are losing their value. On the contrary. ERP, CRM, industry-specific solutions, and specialized systems remain the primary repositories for business data, processes, and controls. What’s changing is the way people work with them.
No company runs entirely on a single technology stack. Even organizations that rely heavily on Microsoft often use additional solutions for areas such as planning, cost estimation, production, service, policy administration, or customer portals. Agentic AI makes it possible to orchestrate processes across these systems. Users are increasingly working from a single intelligent interface, while agents carry out actions across multiple applications.
Some believe that the traditional chat interface is here to stay, even in the era of AI and agents. The reality will be more nuanced. When agents carry out business-critical processes, user experience will likely become even more important than it is today. Employees need to understand what an agent is doing, why certain steps are suggested, and when human approval is required.
Trust thus becomes an essential part of adoption. This includes both trust in the technology and also trust in the processes supported by that technology. A good agent, therefore, isn’t just smart; they’re also transparent, explainable, and embedded in the way people work every day.

Many organizations still view AI in terms of individual use cases—a chatbot here, a copilot there. But the real change will be much more significant. In the not-too-distant future, AI agents will represent and important part of new operational model, where employees spend less time interacting with systems and more time making decisions.
