Reducing the number of mouse clicks in Dynamics AX 2012

As you know, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 offers a lot more functions, features and flexibility. The number of mouse clicks required for the same processes seems to have increased too. Is it still possible to operate Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 with a minimum number of mouse clicks? Frans Hoogenraad senior consultant and solution architect at HSO tried this for a week.

For tasks that you execute very often, it pays off to try to use key strokes instead of the mouse. Though some of the tasks in AX were not practical without the mouse, I was happy to find a way to start “view details” (go to main table) with the keyboard. Only a few tasks like BOM designer and drag records from the set of available records and select them in a group, could not be performed without the mouse. So I was able to save a lot of mouse meters and mouse clicks.

Get inspired by the following examples and feel free to memorize the keystrokes listed at the end.

Example 1: How to open a sales order when you are in the inventory menu?
Alt v – m – s – arrow down 5x – enter – arrow down – enter
Alt + v together will pull down the view menu, with the modules (m). S stands for sales and marketing. Sales orders is the 6th common menu.

Example 2: How to create a production order from a sales order line without the mouse?
Alt p – p – Enter – p
Press and release the Alt key, to show yellow box characters. Type p which indicates the first p (Pick and pack ribbon tab), type p again which indicates the Product and supply button and press Enter to select this button. Type p to select the first option (Production order) that starts with a p.

Note: Click to enlarge. In other languages, other key strokes might be needed and the keystrokes will be easier if your role contains less buttons and sub buttons.
