What to do now that Dynamics AX mainstream support is ending?
Mainstream support ended for Dynamics AX 2009 in October of 2018. Mainstream support ends for the last release of Dynamics AX 2012 in October 2021. With mainstream support vanishing, many companies running an AX system are feeling the pressure. The good news is that there is no need to panic. You and your company have options.
First of all, what do you get from mainstream support? Mainstream support offers security updates, hotfixes, warranty claims and self service reports. Mainstream support also releases design changes, processes requests for new and improved features, and offers incident support at no extra charge. The end of mainstream support means that Microsoft will no longer take measures to enhance Dynamics AX and whatever warranty you hold will become null and void.
What are your options?
Option 1: Do nothing
The easiest option, but in the end the most costly one, is to do nothing and hope for the best. While this seems like the most low-effort option, your system will continue to deteriorate and your staff will have to find solutions to the increasing number of errors in your system. Productivity will slow, frustrations among your staff towards your technology will increase and your profits will get eaten away by higher operational costs.
Option 2: Purchase an extended support agreement from Microsoft
According to Microsoft, extended support is no longer available to purchase for AX 2009. If you’re still running AX 2009, this option is unfortunately no longer on the table. For businesses running AX 2012, and extended support agreement is available until October 2023, depending on you.
An extended support agreement is a more limited version of mainstream support. Extended support includes the following:
- Ability to purchase a paid support agreement
- Security update support
- Non-security hotfix support (If extended hotfix agreement is purchased within 90 days of ending Mainstream support)
- Self Service Support (Microsoft Knowledge Base & Microsoft Help & Support Site)
Option 3: Pay for a custom support contract
Paying for a support contract buys you time make a thoughtful decision on whether you should upgrade to Dynamics 365 or not. Rid yourself of Dynamic AX errors, maintain your cloud environment and keep up on your AX performance.
