When you transfer your IT environment to the cloud, you immediately realise added value for your business. It is important to understand that the advantage of cloud migration depends heavily on how you set up your IT environment.

Determining the right strategy is not always easy, because the situation is different for each customer. “It is important to provide you with an integrated plan of the current situation and the plan that you wish to achieve,” explains Kristijan de Weerd, Business Development Manager at HSO. He advises companies to align their business objectives with their IT strategy in a roadmap, to take maximum advantage of cloud migration. “That’s not a daily undertaking for many organisations, which is why it can be smart to hire a reliable partner who has a wealth of experience in this area.”

Advantage cloud migration

An important part of the cloud migration roadmap is to make sure you have the right strategy. This way you can transfer everything to the cloud, but you can also choose to take it in a phased approach. “There’s no right or wrong way,” says De Weerd.

He distinguishes five successive migration strategies:

  • Rehosting
  • Refactoring
  • Rearchitecting
  • Rebuilding
  • Replacing

“When rehosting, you move part of your environment, such as a server, one-on-one to the cloud. With both the refactoring and rearchitecting strategy, you’ll see how to rethink your application landscape in small steps and the improvements you can make in it, so you will find that certain things you now manage yourself, as a cloud service, they will decrease.

With a rebuilding strategy, you can make your software suitable for use in the cloud. And with a replacing strategy, you’ll replace your current IT systems with cloud services. “These migration strategies help determine which new technology you are going to use in the cloud and what benefits cloud migration brings. You can choose to only remove the infrastructure from the cloud (rehosting). The other extreme is to replace an application or workload with a cloud service (replace).” See the image below.

Cloud Migration migration strategies

The choice of Infrastructure-as-a-Service, Platform-as-a-Service or Software-as-a-Service determines your degree of flexibility, scalability, and cost savings. For example, when you move all your services from the cloud, you no longer have a cost of purchasing, maintaining and managing hardware. “But even when you move to the cloud with small steps, you will notice cloud migration benefits in terms of scalability. You can get exactly the amount of services you need from the cloud. This means that you don’t have to buy an IT environment that is based on certain peak times,” says De Weerd.

Added value

HSO believes that every cloud transition should start with the basics. “That’s what we call the Cloud Foundation, in which we lay the technical foundation of your IT in the cloud. Things such as security, identity & access management are regulated. “When that base is in order, it can start transferring workloads. “That can be an application, a process, or also a complete server. “Importantly, you look closely at the process where cloud services can provide added value to reap cloud migration benefits.

“That’s our daily work,” says De Weerd. “We talk to customers every day about how to achieve an IT roadmap from their business goals. For customers, this is often an exercise that takes place only once every three to five years.” In addition, partners have a lot of knowledge and expertise in the field of suppliers and industry specific solutions. “We know exactly what is available and possible, so we can plan solutions based on a customer’s issues. This allow us to obtain the best advantage out of a cloud migration.”

Gain benefit from your cloud migration

So in order to take advantage of your cloud migration, it is important to translate your business goals into an IT roadmap, which describes and records the selections you have chosen to take for your migration strategy. The business case depends on the strategy that is followed and is also different per organisation, because no IT landscape is the same. To gain the maximum benefit from the cloud, you are advised to turn to a specialised partner for assistance.
